The 29-year-old engineer, surnamed Hsu, was found dead in front of his computer at home in January. His parents said he had been putting in about 95 hours of overtime per month for six months before his death.
The prosecutors and NTU doctors that the family went to all determined that the cause of death was overwork. However, investigations by the Bureau of Labor Insurance said that this death was unrelated to the amount of overtime and was unwilling to identify the death as occupational. The two results were completely different, so this case could only be sent to be reexamined by the Council of Labor Affairs.
It is actually not news that engineers in the technology industry work long hours. Some engineers in Hsinchu Science Park say that it is normal for them to only get four or five days off a month, and work 12 to 14 hours a day. Many of their colleagues work for a few years, earn a few million NTD, and then choose to leave. In addition, because of revisions in government policies, many technology factories have stopped giving stock bonuses. Many engineers say that "rich and young" workers in the technology industry are a thing of the past.
